​Why is my garage door making loud or grinding noises when opening or closing?

Loud or grinding noises usually indicate friction, loose hardware, poor alignment, or a worn component. Common causes include worn rollers, dry hinges, loose brackets, a bent track, or a track that has shifted out of alignment. If the noise comes from the opener, the problem may involve the drive gear, chain, belt, rail, or trolley.

Applying a garage door safe lubricant to the rollers, hinges, bearings, and springs may reduce noise caused by friction. The tracks should be cleaned but not lubricated because grease can collect dirt and interfere with the rollers.
